Blauwe Levensader, groene corridor
De Kleine Nete ontspringt in een hoogveengebied in Mol en stroomt diagonaal door onze provincie. Zij versmelt als getijden-rivier in Lier met de Grote Nete tot de Beneden-Nete.
Een belangrijke zijbeek van de Kleine Nete is de Bollaak. Deze beek herbergt tal van zeldzame vissoorten, waaronder de rivierdonderpad. Deze kleine vis heeft geen luchtblaas zodat hij zijn leven op de bodem doorbrengt. Tijdens de voedseljacht gebruikt hij zijn borstvinnen als roeispanen. Net zoals de stekelbaars maakt hij een nest en verzorgt hij zijn kleintjes. Door zijn aanwezigheid heeft Europa de Kleine Netevallei aangeduid als Habitatrichtlijn-gebied als extra bescherming.
De Kleine Netevallei wordt gebruikt als migratieroute door alle dieren en planten en ook als trekroute door vogels. Op deze wijze worden geïsoleerde populaties terug met elkaar verbonden.
