The Kloesebos

The most important natural values in Aarschot can be found in the complex 's Hertogenheide, Schaapsvijver and Kloesebos. Native tree species, heather clearings, various animal species,... This green oasis has an enormous biodiversity. In the past, this was probably largely heathland. The remaining clearings are now completely overgrown, creating a poor acid oak forest over large parts of the site.

In a healthy and interesting forest stock, there is room for forest edges and clearings. This is interesting for numerous plant and animal species that would otherwise not be able to live in the dark monotonous forest. Butterflies, for example, need sunny spots with strong flowering shrubs. Because the seed of heather can remain in the soil for up to 100 years, we find heather in the clearings in the Kloesebos.
