Spanish fort from the 16th century from which the besieged Ostend could be bombarded. During World War I, this well-preserved fort was taken over by German troops, reinforced with a bunker and used as an observation post in flooded areas. 'Das Alte Fort', as the Germans call it, is particularly strategically located along the canal with a view of the sluice complex of Nieuwpoort. Therefore, it is regularly bombed. The fort is still visible today as a rise in the flat polder landscape. It has been protected as a monument since 1981. Photo: aerial photo of the Fort of Nieuwendamme.
