Fuerte español del siglo XVI desde el cual se podía bombardear la sitiada Ostende. Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, este bien conservado fuerte es ocupado por tropas alemanas, reforzado con un búnker y utilizado como puesto de observación en un área inundada.
'Das Alte Fort', como lo llaman los alemanes, se encuentra en una ubicación particularmente estratégica, a lo largo del canal y con vista al complejo de esclusas de Nieuwpoort. Por ello, es bombardeado con regularidad.
Hoy en día, el fuerte todavía es visible como una elevación en el plano paisaje polder. Ha sido protegido como monumento desde 1981.
