Kasteel van Wilder

Description

The formerly privileged fief of Wilre previously depended on Heverlee and underwent several changes of lords during the Middle Ages. It reverted to the Cruyckenburg family in 1629 through marriage and remained in their possession until the end of the ancien régime. Mention of a fortified castle during the second half of the 14th century, destroyed by Spanish troops in 1578. In 1629, Wilre was described as a large estate including among others a newly erected castle, a water mill also recently rebuilt, the "Cammenmolen", and a farm destroyed by fire. An engraving by Harrewyn from 1690 from the work of J. Le Roy gives us an image of the whole now disappeared, partially surrounded by moats and walls. Portal marked in a checkered frame with creative crown of the pediment in the center of the main wall flanked by two corner towers. Visibly L-shaped castle, located on the back of the courtyard; square tower surmounted by a fancy bulbous bell tower narrowed to the vault; right wing worked in suite of three bell gables above an open gallery on the side of the square; The right-angled frame roofs are integrated into the upper chamfer roof of this wing (simple cornice on the garden side). The current castle, relatively simple, was erected in 1823 in a late classical style. It is located in a vast park dotted with many poplars. The beautiful Wilderdreef, built in 1687 by the Count of Cruyckenburg, connects Wilder Castle to the now defunct Ruisbeek Castle.

The current castle, surrounded by a vast park with some ancient species of rare trees, is currently inhabited by the Broqueville family. The old farmhouse located along the double plane tree trail was transformed in 1990 into a secretariat, cafeteria and various premises necessary for the operation of the golf course of about 50 ha.
