The Grote Markt of Lier is the large market square of the Belgian city of Lier. The triangular shape suggests that Lier has a Frankish origin.
The Grote Markt has been an important center of Lier since the Middle Ages, which was elevated to city status in 1212. Several main streets converge here from the city gates. In 1367, a cloth hall was established here, which later became the town hall. As early as 1383, the part of the market in front of this cloth hall was paved. In 1557, the entire market was raised and paved with cobblestones.
