The Atheneum Léonie de Waha is a Belgian high school known for its artworks, located in the heart of Liège, at Avroy-Boulevard 96.
The mayor Jules d'Andrimont asked the liberal feminist and educator Léonie de Waha to establish a lyceum for young daughters, as there had been no higher education opportunities for girls in the whole city until then. Thus, she founded an institute supérieur de demoiselles on Hazinelle Street, which was taken over by the city in 1878 and subsequently received the name Lycée de Waha. Religious education was provided according to the respective denomination, with total withdrawal also being possible. The bishop threatened excommunication for all those involved in the development of the school concept, as the simultaneous presence in the teaching staff of a Protestant pastor and a rabbi alongside the Catholic priest was already unusual and unacceptable for some. The actual ban pronounced by Mgr de Montpellier on the day of the opening over the entire school community was lifted by his successor Doutreloux.
