Gérard-Assuère Louis, Lord of Angleur, Baron of Horion, and brother of the future Prince-Bishop of Liège, Franciscus Karel van Velbrück, built the castle around 1720. Taken over by the de Thier family before 1738, the building would pass into the hands of the Nagelmackers family, a Liège family of businessmen and bankers who named the castle. This family resided in the castle from 1814 until shortly after World War I. It then became the property of an Antwerp real estate company and subsequently from 1930 of Ulrich Fraipont. The city purchased the castle in 1939. The castle served as the town hall of Angleur from 1944 to 1951 during the reconstruction of the castle of Péralta. It was acquired in 1995 by a person who wanted to renovate it, but overwhelmed by the scale and costs of the work, the owner sold the castle in 2005 to Spi + and Logis social de Liège.
