Neuvice gets its name from the Latin expression novus vicus, new vinâve, new neighborhood. A rather contradictory designation, knowing that this neighborhood is part of the historic heart of Liège and constitutes one of the oldest streets. It should be noted that the city has endured numerous assaults and that its historic heart is ultimately the only one that has survived the ravages of time. We will linger on number 55, where we can observe the sign of the Moriåne. The term refers to a person of mixed race. Several signs of the same type were found in the city. In the 18th century, this sign housed a printing house, that of Bassompierre. Liège printers were particularly renowned for their forgeries. They were not subject to the copyright law in effect in France, and became wealthy by reproducing, without permission, the most popular writings of their time.
