Town Hall of Tongeren

On the site of the current town hall stood the old cloth hall and the Tailor's Chamber, which were destroyed in the fire of 1677. In this fire, the Tongeren town hall, located at the corner of the Grote Markt and the Sint-Truiderstraat, was also consumed by flames.
On February 27, 1737, the city council decided to build a new town hall on the grounds of the destroyed cloth hall. Two months later, on April 26, 1737, the foundation stone was laid in the presence of mayors Willem-Abraham Cours and Jacob Grouwels. By the end of 1738, the rough construction was mostly completed, but due to the outbreak of the Austrian Succession War, the finishing of the town hall was delayed until 1755. The plans for the town hall were created by Pascal Barbier, who was inspired by the town hall of Liège.
