Malonne Abbey was founded around 651 by Saint Bertuinus, an Anglo-Saxon monk. The Benedictine monk died in Malonne in 698. In the 9th century a second church was built and in 1193 a third Romanesque church was consecrated. The monks chose the Rule of Augustine in 1147.
