According to tradition, the four sons Aymon (the four native children) Renaud, Richard, Alard and Guichard, were chased during their journey through the Ardennes and, because they could not get around the coniferous rock because of the floodwaters of the Meuse, they were forced to horse, which they did with their wonderful horse 'Bayard'. Hence the name.
In reality, a small rocky outcrop already existed, but Louis XIV had the rock cut further to allow easy passage for his army. This passage was later widened to allow for road traffic.
On the rock is a memorial plaque stating that King Albert I of Belgium climbed the rock
The rock is 35m high.
