The castle is located in the rolling landscape, along the Bocq. The castle is situated in a spot where construction took place as early as the Roman times; Gallo-Roman foundations have been located. Several Roman artifacts have already been found in Halloy.
Multiple castles have been built on the site. In the Middle Ages, Halloy was an important settlement in the Condroz. The castle was one of the residences of the prince-bishops of Liège. Prince-Bishop Diederik of Bavaria stayed there from 1048 to 1075. In 1275, the castle belongs to the major bailiff of the Condroz, Jean de Hallois. This Jan van Hallois was known from the 13th-century Guerre de la Vache, in which he played a significant role. By the beginning of the 14th century, the castle is owned by Jean le Borgne de Halloy, lord of the adjacent château Mouffrin. In the 19th century, the castle became the residence of the geologist and politician Jean Baptiste d'Omalius d'Halloy.
