“Imagine if this royal palace sank into the ground,” Bart Van Loo says in my ears, “and that, slowly and triumphantly, the palace of Philip the Good (1396-1467) rises from the ground towards the sky.” I am standing in Brussels' Palace Square looking and trying to picture away King Philip's neoclassical office and replacing it with a more glorious but vanished palace: the legendary Coudenberg Palace, the residence of the Burgundian Duke Philip the Good.
