Already around 600 AD there is already a chapel in the hamlet of Steenbergen, and in 877 part of the area came into the possession of the Abbey of Nivelles. Therefore, the parish church was dedicated to Saint Gertrude. In the late Middle Ages, a place of pilgrimage of this saint arose here. The culmination of this devotion took place in the 17th century. Water from the St. Gertrude's Well there, and soil from the cemetery, were said to be a probabilistic remedy against rats and mice. A tombstone of lord Hendrik Van der Galen and his family lies in front of the main entrance.
