In 2012, the province of Antwerp completed construction of a flood plain along the Babbelsebeek in Kontich. This measure is part of a larger plan to protect the environment of the valley of the Lachene- and Babbelsebeek against flooding during extreme weather conditions. The construction of the Babbelse Lakes is a sustainable solution to prevent flooding in basements and gardens in the center of Lint. Some pond berms were constructed and banks were leveled to create more storage. The result is a green lung in the town of Kontich, maintained by volunteers of Natuurpunt and local farmers.
