The Saint Peter's Chapel is a Romanesque-Gothic chapel, probably built around 1225 as part of a larger Romanesque church (basilica with transept and side aisles) to replace a wooden place of worship established in 764 by Saint Gummarus. In the late 15th century, after the completion of the Saint Gummarus Church, the western part (nave and side aisles) was demolished according to Canon R. Lemaire, leaving only the choir section, a small part of the nave, and the transept preserved as the current chapel: a conclusion based in part on the unnatural floor plan and the clearly later west wall that is not connected to the side walls and still contains two Romanesque pillars.
