La Cappella di San Pietro è una cappella romanico-gotica, presumibilmente costruita intorno al 1225 come parte di una chiesa romanica più grande (basilica con transetto e navate laterali) in sostituzione di un luogo di preghiera in legno eretto nel 764 da San Gummaro. Alla fine del XV secolo, dopo il completamento della Chiesa di San Gummaro, secondo il canonico R. Lemaire, la parte occidentale (navata e navate laterali) fu demolita, lasciando solo la parte del coro, una piccola porzione della navata e il transetto come l'attuale cappella: affermazione basata anche sul piano di fondazione innaturale e sul chiaro muro occidentale più recente che non è collegato con i muri laterali e contiene ancora due pilastri romanici.
