In De Vennen, the Grote Nete is still modest in size: no more than three meters wide. The stream meanders through a varied landscape of peat bogs, alder forests and thickets. The rusty brown color of the Nete, and of the puddles that you see here and there between the alders, is caused by iron oxide (also called iron oer). This combination of iron with oxygen is created by iron minerals from the soil coming into contact with air in surface water. You can often also see an oily layer in water rich in iron oxide: which is formed by bacteria that help in the formation of iron oxide.
