The belt of forts around Antwerp was built in the 19th century but was soon outdated. The forts fell into disuse and some were given new functions. In Fort 6 this has happened quite radically. Large parts of the fort have disappeared to make way for the construction of sports grounds. On the south side, the structure with moat and ramparts has been preserved. This is especially important for nature. The water is a hunting ground for the water bat and the late flyer. Bats can also be found in the more open areas, such as the common pipistrelle. The wooded edge around the large moat is the breeding ground for typical forest species such as Solomon's seal and planed straw. There are also other species of bats here, such as the bearded bat and the common long-eared bat. Although it is often thought that this fort has few natural values due to all the damage, this is not the case. The many bats are protected everywhere by European and Flemish regulations.
