The "Hospices"
The buildings of the former asylum are located on the Senne, opposite the Arenberg mills. They were built between 1290 and 1308 by order of Maria of Rethel, Lady of Enghien and widow of Walter I of Enghien. They include 16th-century construction, remarkable pieces of furniture and a beautiful late Gothic chapel.
For a long time, the chapel was a place of pilgrimage in honour of Saint Erasmus, for the healing of intestinal ailments. Unfortunately, a fire in 2003 destroyed a large part of the buildings on the site of the old asylum. Since then, the "Hospices" has been waiting for restoration and a new interpretation of the destination. Since April 2006, the site has been on the Walloon heritage protection list. A citizens' association has also been set up to defend the site: "les Amis de l'Hospice".
