The Boudewijn Canal was dug between 1896 and 1905. It was then called: Canal Brugge-Zeebrugge. In 1953, the canal was renamed Boudewijn Canal, on the occasion of the visit of King Boudewijn. It runs through the entire port area of Brugge-Zeebrugge and connects the Zeebrugge outer harbor with the Bruges inner harbor. It also provides Zeebrugge with an inland shipping connection via the Bruges ring canal and the Ghent-Bruges canal. Over its entire course, it is approximately 12 kilometers long and is entirely within the city limits of Brugge.
