Because our Lord of Roeselare, Adolf of Kleef-Ravenstein, rebelled against Maximilian of Austria, mercenaries set fire to the Saint Michael's Church in 1488. A few years later, a new church in late Gothic style was built with a pointed tower 91 meters high. A storm destroyed the sharp spire of the sturdy west tower in 1735. Between 1742 and 1757, the tower received its current octagonal bell-shaped covering. Here you will find the city carillon, and the bell tower museum is also located in the tower.
