The Gansstrate is already mentioned in the Bruges city account in 1291. Other documents state Ganstrate .
The origin of the name remains obscure. According to Karel De Flou and Jos De Smet, the name had nothing to do with the species. They didn't know what the origin was. It cannot therefore be entirely ruled out that, for example, geese were bred there.
