The section of the Bruges ramparts from 1297 that lies between the Dampoort and the Kruispoort is called the Kruisvest, named after the Kruispoort and the municipality of Sint-Kruis with which it forms the border.
From the Kruispoort to the Dampoort, it is a wide promenade on top of the former fortress. On it stand four old windmills: the Sint-Janshuismolen, the Koeleweimolen, the Bonne-Chièremolen, and the Nieuwe Papegaai. The Sint-Janshuismolen and the Koeleweimolen are still capable of milling.
