So-called "Bridge of the waterhoek", known from the novel "De teleurgang van den waterhoek" by Stijn Streuvels. Iron arch bridge of the Vierendeel type over the Scheldt, connects Ruien with Avelgem (West Flanders) to replace the former ferry. The first Scheldt bridge here from 1903-04 was also the first application of the diagonalless truss girder in bridge construction designed by A. Vierendeel, then chief engineer-director of the Provincial Technical Service in West Flanders, inaugurated in 1906, blown up by the Germans in 1918 and replaced by a new bridge in 1927, in turn dynamited in 1940 and replaced by the current bridge, also a Vierendeel bridge with iron arch girders.
