The Grote Markt is a market square in the center of the Belgian city of Sint-Niklaas. With its area of 3.19 hectares, it is known as the largest market square of België.In 1219, Joan of Constantinople donated a considerable piece of land east of the current Grand Place. These "papenakkers" or "priesthood" grounds were intended to ensure that the parish founded barely two years earlier could survive. The site was six bunders in size and is located approximately at the level of the current Ankerstraat. The name Papenakkerstraat still reminds of this history.
