In Het Leen, deciduous and coniferous trees are crisscrossed, it seems. That was once different. In the past, coniferous forest was mainly planted in the meetjesland to use that wood for mining in the south of Belgium. After that, deciduous forest was chosen again. That is why Het Leen and many other meetjesland forest areas often consist of a patchwork of these different vegetation.
The Leen is originally a wet, swampy area. Yet we are not standing here with our feet in the water. Of course, the trees here are for a large part in between. They also need a lot of water to grow and thus pull the soil dry.
Commission; Can you find some needles and some leaves of deciduous trees within a distance of 100 meters?
