The Bataviabrug is the first of three new bicycle and pedestrian bridges that will connect the future neighborhood of Oude Dokken with the city center. Local residents began using the bridge in the summer of 2012. This was the first major infrastructure project in Oude Dokken.
The bridge is designed by the Parisian firm Feichtinger Architects. It consists of a fixed and a movable part. The fixed part is located on the side of Koopvaardijlaan. The movable part is a technological marvel: the bridge can be raised centrally over the waterway so that ships can pass underneath. Even when the bridge is in motion, pedestrians and cyclists can still cross it. This ensures that the connection to the city center is maintained at all times. The movement is always announced with a flashing light and an audible signal.
