The Zelzatetunnel is a tunnel under the Ghent-Terneuzen canal. The tunnel is part of the A11/E34 and is located in Zelzate. The Zelzatetunnel is situated between the exits Zelzate-West and Zelzate-East and has 2x2 lanes without a hard shoulder. The maximum speed in the tunnel is limited to 90 km/h. The ceiling of the tunnel is located 1 meter below the bottom of the canal, allowing the passage of sea vessels up to 12 meters deep. In 2022, the new sea lock in Terneuzen will open, which will allow ships up to 14.5 meters deep. For that reason, Flemish Minister of Public Works Hilde Crevits announced in January 2011 that a new and deeper Zelzatetunnel should be built. According to Crevits, it should be in place by 2018. In May 2015, this was revised by the new minister Ben Weyts: this would only be addressed after the completion of the lock in 2022. The tunnel would be located further south than the current tunnel.
