Along the Parmavaart in Moerbeke, three Spanish forts were established at the end of the 16th century, part of a line of forts in the Zeelandic Flanders border area south of Axel (Netherlands), built under the governor Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma (1578-1579). They were intended to repel the attacks of the States in the land of Waas and southern regions. From north to south, these are: Fort Francipanie, the small redoubt Papemutse at Keizershoek, and Fort Terwest near the Moervaart. The Parmavaart of Moerbeke runs from the Moervaart northward to the Grote Kreek. This connecting canal was partially known in the 19th century as Terwestvaart and Vennebeek. According to some authors, the Parmavaart of Moerbeke may have been part of the canal of the same name dug between Stekene and Kallo in 1584-1585 on the orders of Alexander Farnese. Of the Spanish forts in Moerbeke from the 80 Years' War (1568-1648), only Fort Francipanie remains.
