Description

In 1928, the Belgian military cemetery was built in the Beverlo camp, including Belgian prisoners of war who had originally been buried in Germany. After the Second World War, Belgian soldiers, executed persons, deportees and political prisoners of the Second World War were buried on the site of the removed German graves. History The Camp of Beverlo, the Royal Park and the New Park King Leopold I had the Camp of Beverlo erected in 1835 against the Dutch neighboring state, at a time when the country's borders were not yet fixed. Initially, the camp consisted of straw huts and wooden barracks. After the peace with the Netherlands in 1839, it was decided to turn the Camp of Beverlo into a permanent camp, which would be built with sustainable materials. From 1846 it was furnished according to plans of General and Minister of War P.E.F. Baron Chazal and Colonel Demanet. Intensive planting campaigns were necessary to protect against the shifting sands of the heathland.
