Public Psychiatric Care Centre Rekem

The Public Psychiatric Care Centre Rekem is a psychiatric hospital in Rekem, part of the municipality of Lanaken, located at Daalbroekstraat 106, west of the hamlet of Daalwezet. It is surrounded by forests that lie on the edge of the Hoge Kempen National Park.
The history of the OPZC actually began in 1792, when the French occupiers expropriated the Château d'Aspremont-Lynden and set up a military hospital there. In 1809 it became a so-called beggars' asylum for the homeless and in 1891 an asylum was established for children placed under judicial jurisdiction.
