Godshouses "De Mûelenaere" are very typical in many aspects: godshouses are built in sober and characteristic architecture. They are sometimes built next to each other, along a street or shielded from the street by a wall with a gate. The majority are built around a courtyard. The garden is usually communal, but is sometimes also divided into plots where each resident could grow some vegetables. Originally, the residences (referred to as 'stone rooms') consisted of a single room that served as a kitchen, living room, and bedroom. A steep staircase led to the attic which offered storage space. The courtyard housed the (communal or not) sanitation facilities. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the cottages were combined in pairs, sometimes in threes, and renovated into a larger and more comfortable home.
