Brewery Smisje

Brewery Smisje, formerly Brewery De Regenboog, is one of the smallest craft breweries in Belgium with a brewing capacity of 2000 liters per batch. It was founded in 1995 by Johan Brandt and was located in Assebroek, a suburb of Bruges, until 2008. Mainly due to the lack of necessary space for expansion (the brewing capacity remained limited to 320 liters per batch), the brewery moved in 2009 to Mater, a part of Oudenaarde. This move also brought about the official name change from De Regenboog to Smisje. In 2010, it was decided to remove all existing beers except for the Christmas beer from the assortment and to launch the new beer Smiske. However, the older Smisje beers were so appreciated that a number of people set up a Facebook group to have the beers brewed again. At the request of regular visitors, the brewer also decided to brew Smiske Bruin in 2011.

The experimental brewery exports over 50% of its production to the United States, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Denmark,...

Since 2012, the beers from this brewery have been allowed to carry the logo "Belgian Hop-Houblon Belge–Belgian Hops." This quality label was launched in September 2011 and is only awarded to beers brewed with a minimum of 50% Belgian hops.
