The villages of Veltem and Beisem were less than a kilometer apart, but still had a separate history for a long time. The eastern parish of Veltem used to belong to the Diocese of Liège. The western parish of Beisem used to belong to the Diocese of Cambrai. The Ferraris map from the 1770s shows the growing villages of Beyssem and Velthem. To the south, the stone road ran from Brussels to Leuven.
At the end of the Ancien Régime, Veltem and Beisem both became a municipality. In the north of the municipality was the hamlet of Beneden-Veltem near the village center of Buken, to which the parish belonged belong. In 1826, under Dutch rule, the separate municipalities were dissolved and united into the new municipality of Veltem-Beisem. The city council wanted to split the municipality again in 1832, but this was not approved by the higher government.
In the second half of the 19th century, the Brussels-Leuven railway line was also built in the south of Veltem-Beisem. A stop was opened on both the Veltemse and Beisem sides.
In the course of the 20th century, the places grew further into a village. With the municipal mergers of 1977, Veltem-Beisem became a part of Herent. Source: Wikipedia
