A sculpture by Marc Leyman has been on display in the front garden of the Gaverse town hall for about ten years. Marc Leyman (°1954) grew up in Vurste and now lives in Amougies in Wallonia.
As an artist, Leyman is intrigued by nature. Natural processes such as birth, growth, flowering and death are an important source of inspiration for the artist. His work shows the slow growth, the full development and the inevitable decay in an abstract way. The love of nature goes hand in hand with a sense of monumentality in his art. Leyman's sculptures are all quite monumental. Due to the fact that the artist is often involved in natural processes, his sculptures are usually made of wood.
The sculpture in Gavere is not in wood, but in sheet steel. Like Leyman's other works, it is an abstract image. This design fits the theme. He shows nature here in its core form, he strips nature down to the root. This results in an interplay of lines and different shapes.
The sculpture was created on the initiative of the local historian Antoine De Smet.
