In cycling, the slope has been best known since 1986 for the cycling race the Tour of Flanders. Together with the Koppenberg and the Muur-Kapelmuur, the Paterberg is one of the toughest climbs of the race and thus also an executioner. The Paterberg is a narrow cobblestone road with an average gradient of 12.5% and a steepest part of 20%. The summit is at an altitude of 48 m.
The Paterberg has been climbed 21 times (1986-2006) in the Tour of Flanders, for the first time in 1986. It always follows after the ascent of the Oude Kwaremont (in 1992 the Kwaremont).
In 1986 and 1987 the Koppenberg followed in the Tour after the Paterberg. In the period 1988-1990 this was the Kortekeer, in 1991 the Nieuwe Kruisberg, in the period 1992-1994 the Hoogberg-Hotond, in the period 1995-2001 again the Kortekeer and in the period 2002-2006 the Koppenberg.
In 2007 it was again included in the Tour of Flanders, this time between the Oude Kwaremont and the Kortekeer.
The Paterberg is also climbed more often in the E3 Prize and Dwars door Vlaanderen.
