This brick mill dominates the landscape from afar. It is a brick grist mill with two coupling stones and an oat letter.
During the First World War it was a busy time for the miller. It happened that 21 farm carts and wagons with their 'bins' were waiting to be ground. Nevertheless, the mill stood seasoned for the entire duration of the war with its flight to the west. The then miller Viktor Tuyttens never wanted to twist him for fear of being accused by the Germans of wanting to send signals with his mill or blade position. The mill indeed stands as a beacon that dominates the entire plain and is visible from afar. Transmitting signals with the position of the blades is an old custom among millers.
When the Germans withdrew behind the Lys in Desselgem in 1918, they shelled the church and the mill of Hulste as the most important observation posts for the army. Due to the dense fog that then hung over the region, it was difficult for the Germans to hit their targets. Dozens of shells came down near the mill. Only once was he hit and lost a rod as a result. The soldiers who used the mill as a lookout had not even noticed that the mill had been hit by an obus.
