In Flemish villages, the church stands in the middle, literally. In Maria-Horebeke, this is not the case. It is the only Protestant rural community that has survived since the sixteenth century. The Old Church of Horebeke does not look like a house of prayer. That was the way it was according to the Edict of Tolerance from 1781.
