The Obelisk is 36 meters high (equal to the one in Paris), surmounted by a 16 flame sun. The obelisk points to the west. The story goes that Earnest Solvay wanted to admire the morning sun through the window of his office which looked in this direction. As this was not possible he decided to create this obelisk that would catch the rays of the morning sun. Some conspiracy theorists say an alternative explanation was to proclaim The Solvay’s Masonic membership, the sun being an oft used symbol of the masons.
