In 2009, the Province of Antwerp, in collaboration with Aquafin, built a catch basin with a pumping system at the mouth of the Molenveldloop. With this, they wanted to reduce the risk of flooding in the vicinity of the Rietlei and Meertsveldstraat. During heavy rainfall, the diluted sewage runs past an overflow into the catch basin. In a separate buffer zone with reed plantations, the water is largely purified in advance, so that the impact of possible contamination is limited. When the water in the Molenveldloop reaches a certain level when it is high tide on the Nete, the pumping station springs into action. With a speed of 635 litres per second per pump, it discharges the Molenveldloop into the Nete. In this way, the excess water can be pumped out in time.
