This place was selected as one of the 15 most breathtaking views of Flanders by De Morgen. From the Sas4 tower, you can see the three canals Bocholt-Herentals, Dessel-Schoten, and Dessel-Kwaadmechelen, a unique feature in Europe. In 2007, the residents of Dessel decided to build a 37-meter-high observation tower at this canal junction. There’s a climb of more than 217 steps waiting for you. However, this ascent is definitely worth it. You can see not only the canals but also the sand extraction operations and the dozens of immense lakes, such as the Zilvermeer, that have emerged here over the past hundred years. These lakes were transformed into recreational waters or nature reserves after the white sand was extracted.
