Description Location
Today, the mine crater known as "Caterpillar" is a pond, surrounded by trees located in the N-part of the Provincial Domain "Vierlingen", about 1300m S of Zillebeke. In the immediate vicinity there are still various (remnants of) concrete constructions, a little more to the NE, on the other side of the Ypres-Komen railway line, is the Hill 60 site.
Description Relict
Today, the mine crater known as "Caterpillar" is a pond, surrounded by trees, located in the N part of the Provincial Domain "Vierlingen". The Caterpillar originally had a diameter of 79m and a depth of 15.5m. Various (remnants of) concrete structures can still be found in the immediate vicinity.
Historical background
The 'Caterpillar' was an artificial hill, created during the excavation of the Ypres-Komen railway bed. The hill owes its name to its winding shape.
The mines of Hill 60 and 'Caterpillar' would become the northern culmination of the Mine Battle of June 7, 1917.
