This monument commemorates the victims of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, a Canadian unit that came under heavy fire here in early May 1915, during the retreat and the Second Battle of Ypres. Only four officers and 150 soldiers emerged unscathed from the battle. The monument was inaugurated in 1985. An additional commemorative plaque was unveiled on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the regiment by Mrs. Hamilton Gault, the widow of the regiment's founder. A space was left in the center of the monument for a maple tree. However, it did not want to grow and was placed behind the monument.
