The Hoegaardsestraat follows the route of the former Roman road from Leuven to Hoegaarden. A little further down towards Bierbeek, a Roman villa was uncovered in the 1970s. This was an important traffic artery in Roman times. The farmstead de Duivelshoeve, located on the left side, was inhabited by Willem Denduyvel in the 15th century. It was an inn for horses along the Hoegaardsestraat, later becoming a tavern and a dance hall. In the past, live pigeons were shot at. For a time, the “Café des Beaux Arts” was located there, known as a destination and resting place for many Leuven residents.
