The rowan tree (Sorbus aucuparia) is a medium-sized tree that sometimes also occurs as a shrub. In the spring, white flowers appear in clusters on the tree, followed by the growth of orange-red berries. They remain until the leaves have fallen off. Birds love these berries, especially the thrushes. The leaves are pinnate with elongated leaflets that have coarsely serrated edges.
In the past, hunters used the fruits as bait to attract animals. They can also be made into liqueur. The hard reddish wood of the rowan tree is used by furniture makers.
