The sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) is easily recognizable by its long, coarsely serrated leaves. They are glossy dark green on the upper side, while the underside is slightly lighter. The chestnuts hang together in groups of burrs with tangled yellow-green spines.
The sweet chestnut originally comes from the Mediterranean region, but it was introduced to our areas very early by the Romans due to its tasty nuts. Roasted in the oven, they are a delicacy.
