The horse on top of this construction fittingly refers to the former function of this square where there was a large water well to water horses and for firefighting water in case of a fire.
The wind and directional signs are artistically crafted as if they were placed in a medieval trading center. Water used to flow down from the top along the channels, and now the fountain serves as a large flower basket. The design and execution date back to 1957 and are by Poperinge resident Lucien De Gheus.
Fun anecdote: the artist gave the horse on the fountain an artistic execution that caused quite a bit of outrage among some locals from Poperinge, who wondered why there was a need for a crocodile there.
