Oriented church founded within a walled cemetery at the outer bend of the street. The oldest mention of the church dates back to 864 as property of the Saint Bavo Abbey in Ghent. The old place of worship is said to have been replaced by a new one in the 13th century. The 15th-century Gothic choir with its three-sided apse now forms the oldest part of the church.
